With only a day left of the monsoon session, the bill for quota in promotions for SCs/STs has joined the long queue of legislations pending with Parliament.

The government’s bid to push the bill in Rajya Sabha fell flat Thursday as the Samajwadi Party and Shiv Sena didn’t let the House function.

Key UPA constituent the DMK joined hands with the SP in demanding the quota be extended to the other backward classes.

An unrelenting BJP, which has paralysed Parliament for 12 days demanding the PM’s resignation over coal block allotments, turned down the government’s latest request to allow the House to take up the bill.

From the NDA, the Shiv Sena broke ranks to oppose the bill, saying “it will kill merit”.
