Attributing the Mumbai attacks to "total lack of coordination" among various intelligence agencies, a senior member of the ruling Congress on Thursday said the incident has shown "serious flaws" in the country's security apparatus.
Participating in a discussion in the Rajya Sabha on the recent terror attacks in Mumbai, Karan Singh referred to RAW, IB, Military Intelligence and State Intelligence Bureaux and said there was a "total lack of coordination" among them.
"We have to function at a higher level of efficiency," he said adding, "passing the buck" would not be accepted any longer.
Maintaining that the Navy knew about the movement of vessels near the Indian coastline, Singh wanted to know why the boats were not tracked. "What were the Coast Guards doing," he asked.
Singh said "erring" officials should be held accountable and demanded disciplinary action against them. The attacks had shown major failures in the security system, he said.
Singh said the whole nation was deeply hurt by the Mumbai attacks. "It was an attack on heart of India, on the mind of India and on the soul of India," he said.
Pointing out that all the Mumbai attackers had come from Pakistan, Singh said terrorism has become widespread in the country and warned of a cyber warfare in the future.
