The Public Works Department (PWD) is all set to auction a number of shops inside city subways to ensure optimising revenues and making the desolate subways safer.
According to PWD officials, tenders are being readied and they are fixing a reserve price. Subways located in various parts of the city such as South Extension, Lajpat Nagar, Defence Colony, Andrews Ganj, Bhikaji Cama Place, Karkardooma and Timarpur, are usually avoided by the pedestrians, especially women.

But the presence of shops, officials believe, will not only attract shoppers to the subways but also motivate pedestrians to take them for crossing roads.
According to the officials, the entire exercise could take at least three months.
There are a total of 102 subways that come under the jurisdiction of the PWD. They are located in areas that have the maximum traffic density.
A few subways that are used by people after dark, especially women, have functional shops.
