Six-coach trains on Line 1 soon

By the end of this year, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) plans to introduce four six-coach trains on the line that sees an average daily footfall of 3 lakh.

According to the DMRC, each metro coach can carry about 300 passengers in one trip. With an average 20 trips a day, the four six-coach trains will ferry an additional 48,000 to 50,000 passengers daily.

“A six-coach metro train will start plying on Line 1 this week. This will be the first six-coach train to be introduced on Delhi metro’s Line 1,” said a Delhi Metro official.

The final trials of the first six-coach train on Line 1 are under progress to ensure safety of the rolling stock, signaling, electrical and other systems.

Earlier, the DMRC had introduced six-coach trains on Line 2 (Jahangirpuri-Gurgaon), Line 3 (Dwarka-Noida) and Line 4 (Yamuna Bank-Anand Vihar).

Presently, 25 trains run on the 25-km long Line 1.

The Delhi Metro has already placed an order with Bharat Earth Movers Ltd (BEML) to convert four of its trains on the corridor into six-coach trains, said sources. All four six-coach trains will be operational by this year-end.

DMRC believes the two additional coaches will cater to about 600 commuters per trip thus providing relief to them, especially during the morning and evening peak hours.

“The transition from four- to six-coach trains has helped decongest busy stations like Kashmere Gate and Rajiv Chowk in recent months,” said Anuj Dayal, DMRC spokesperson.

Presently, the Delhi Metro is used by more than 15 lakh passengers on any working day on its six operational lines. More than 2,700 train trips are made each day, traversing over 69,000km in a day.
