A Delhi government committee on Thursday approval (in principle) construction of 16 exclusive corridors for buses spanning 375-kilometres across the Capital.

“We have recommended that Delhi needs more BRT corridors to strengthen public transport system. But we have yet to explore how these projects will be funded,” Delhi Chief Secretary Rakesh Mehta said.

The decision was taken in a meeting of 12-member special task force constituted by the Delhi High Court to look for solutions to increasing traffic problem in the city.

According to officials, the BRT system costs at least Rs 20 crore a kilometre and Delhi would need a whopping Rs 7,500 crore to construct these 16 new corridors.

While some money can come from the Delhi government, officials said the transport department would have to look for other options to get the rest of the money.
