In a bid to provide seamless driving experience to motorists, the Delhi traffic police have decided to synchronise signal timings on some busy corridors. The condition being — they have to maintain a particular speed limit.
The traffic police are now working to transform 25 corridors to 'green corridors' through synchronisation of signal timings. An order in this regard was issued to the agency managing traffic signals, last week.
According to a senior traffic police officer, they have already initiated a pilot project on three roads — Subramaniam Bharti Marg in New Delhi, Patel Road in west Delhi and Lodhi Road in south Delhi — on priority basis.
Some of the other corridors, which would be included in the list of 'green corridors', include Aurobindo Marg, Mathura Road, stretches of Ring Road and Outer Ring Road and Africa Avenue among others, said sources.
The traffic police will implement the plan on these corridors after a successful trial run on the three roads.
"We have already synchronised all signals on these roads to make them green corridors for motorists. We are monitoring the flow of traffic to check if it matches the signal timing," said Anil Shukla, additional commissioner of police (traffic).
According to him, synchronisation of signals will not only provide signal free rides to motorists but significantly reduce road accidents also. "This will also incorporate a sense of safe movement among motorists and disperse traffic at a faster speed," an officer said.
The DCPs of all traffic ranges have been asked to analyse the flow of traffic on these stretches and accordingly tune in the signal timings.
They have also been directed to ensure that all signals on these corridors are functioning properly.
