The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has decided to fine anyone found keeping construction material on the roadside as it may clog the drains during monsoons.

Mayor of SDMC, Savita Gupta, said that the decision was taken this week after the corporation noticed large scale construction works being carried out in South Delhi. According to her, many builders leave cement, bricks and other construction material on the roads which are then washed away into the drains leading to waterlogging.

"We have directed the ground staff to keep a tab on areas where constructions are on. They have been told to ask builders and individuals to store the materials in their own premises. If not, the staff will report to the senior officials and violators will be issued notices to remove their materials failing which appropriate action will be taken," said Gupta.

The violators will be fined under the Delhi Municipal Act 1957 where the littering cost will be R200, plus the removal charge. Once seized, the corporation will auction the materials and keep the money.
