Speeding BMW rams auto-rickshaw on Copernicus Marg, two injured

Two persons, including a teacher, were injured when a speeding luxury vehicle collided with an auto-rickshaw in central Delhi on Sunday evening, police said.

Two persons, including a teacher, were injured when a speeding luxury vehicle collided with an auto-rickshaw in central Delhi on Sunday evening, police said.

According to police, the accident took place at the Madhav Rao Scindia Marg-Copernicus Marg crossing around 9:30 pm and the victims were identified as Sunita, the teacher and Vijay, the auto-rickshaw driver.

"The auto-rickshaw was heading towards the Copernicus Marg when the errant vehicle, a BMW, rammed it head-on," said a senior police officer.

According to police, Sunita, who is employed as a teacher at the adjacent Kerala School, was heading to her central Delhi residence when the accident took place.

A group of bystanders, who had witnessed the accident, intimated the police control room even as the errant driver, later identified as Ravinder Singh, rushed both Sunita and Vijay to the Trauma Centre at AIIMS.

"Both the victims were admitted but Sunita was soon discharged after being administered primary medical treatment. However, Vijay is still admitted there and his statement is yet to be recorded though doctors said he is stable and recovering," the officer said.

Meanwhile, Ravinder was arrested for rash and negligent driving after police traced the ownership of his BMW to the owner of a private firm located in south Delhi's Greater Kailash Part I.

In a similar case, a 45-year-old Indian Army personnel was crushed to death by a speeding Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) bus in northeast Delhi on Monday afternoon.

The victim, identified as Mukesh Kumar, who worked as a driver in the Indian Army, was headed to work on his motorcycle when the accident took place at Maujpur Chowk near the Welcome area.

The bus was chartered to a school in Mayur Vihar and was carrying school children. The errant bus driver, Rampal, 42, was arrested from the spot and booked for rash driving.
