The 23-year-old deceased, identified as Bahadur Lal, was driving his Eeco taxi when the speeding Audi car rammed his vehicle from behind on the BRT corridor near the Lajpat Nagar bus stop on Thursday. Both the vehicles were coming from the Moolchand side when the accident took place. Lal lived with his family in Siraspur locality near Dhaula Kuan in west Delhi.

The police said the driver of the Audi car, identified as Rahul Arora, 22, was driving at high speed. He probably lost control over his vehicle and rammed straight into the back portion of the Eeco taxi.

Sources said Arora was returning to his home in Model Town after attending a late night party. However, investigators claimed that his medical examination did not hint he was driving under the influence of liquor.

After the accident, Arora was booked for rash and negligent driving causing hurt and the FIR was registered against him at the Lajpat Nagar police station. On Saturday, the police converted the case into causing death by negligence. The Audi car, bearing a Chandigarh registration number, and the Eeco taxi were confiscated.

A senior police officer said a constable posted at the spot saw the accident.

“I was standing on the footpath when I spotted an Audi car that was moving in a zig-zag way. Within seconds, the speeding Audi car rammed a taxi moving ahead of it. The impact of the hit was so powerful that the taxi climbed on the footpath. The taxi driver was seriously injured. He was rushed to AIIMS Trauma centre in a PCR van,” the constable said.
