Popularly known as speed cameras, these gadgets automatically click photographs of speeding vehicles.

This is the first time that such speed cameras would be installed on Indian roads. With the ever-growing vehicles on city roads and increasing number of accidents, the age-old interceptors would no longer do the needful when it comes to managing traffic on busy high speed roads, feels the Delhi Police.

To start with, such cameras would be installed at strategic points on the three accident-prone high speed roads that lead to the airport. These roads include the road connecting Radisson crossing with T3, NSG crossing at Northern Access Road with T3 via Aerocity Airport Metro station on national highway 8 and the Mahipalpur road with T3 via the Aerocity Metro station.

"This year, at least five persons were killed on these roads, while a huge number of accidents took place on them, said a police officer. "We want to complete the installation process and make them operational within a month," said Garg.

The police have already asked the Delhi Integrated Multi Modal Transit System Ltd (DIMTS), an urban transport and infrastructure services company, to identify suitable equipment and design the cameras accordingly.

In many countries such as France and several parts of the US, speed cameras have been installed in areas where accidents occur frequently.

The police also have plans to install such speed cameras on high speed corridors including national highway (NH) 1, NH 8, NH 10, NH 24 and NH 236.
