Stephen’s list out, English cut-off goes up

In what could set a precedent this admission season, St Stephen’s College on Tuesday declared its cut-off list with an increase of one per cent over last year’s in English (Hons) for students from commerce and arts streams.

Commerce students need to have 98 per cent in the best of four subjects and humanities students 88 per cent to qualify for the interview. For science students, the cut-off is the same as last year — 93 per cent.

General category students need at least 80 per cent in elective English or 90 per cent in core English to qualify. Christian/SC/ST candidates need 75 per cent in elective English or 85 per cent in Core English. A 15 per cent relaxation would be given to Christian/ST/SC for all subjects.

In contrast, the Economics cut-off has fallen by one per cent for commerce students to 96 per cent. For science students, it is 94.5 per cent against last year’s 95. For humanities students, the cut-off remains at 94 per cent.

The surprise packages are the science courses where the cut-offs have increased. While Physics (H) cut-off has gone up by one per cent to 92 (Physics, Chemistry and Math), Chemistry (H) cut-off has shot up by two per cent to 87 per cent (PCM).

Asish Roy, HoD, English at St Stephen’s, dismissed the fear that Delhi students may lose out to those from other places because of low marks in Class XII English paper. “In fact, we have received some excellent applications and it’s not true that Delhi students have not done well in English paper,” he said.

Some campus colleges, however, denied that the high cut-off for English at St Stephen’s would affect the cut-off of other colleges. “St Stephen’s has a different admission procedure, with weightage being given to interview and Class X marks,” said Vineeta Chandran, teacher in charge of English at Ramjas College.
