Student moves court against Stephen's College

The Delhi high court on Friday issued a notice to St Stephen's College on a petition challenging different cut-off marks within the Christian reservation for admission to various graduation courses.

Presiding over the vacation bench of the court, justice Manmohan Singh sought the stand of the college by June 27.

The petition was moved by lawyer Ashok Agarwal for one Nikhil Neil Das, a student, who secured 89% marks in Class 12, but was not allowed to appear in an admission interview in the college under the Christian quota.

Das had applied for admission to BA Economics (Hons) course for the 2011-12 session. He has alleged that the college "illegally and unconstitutionally" set a criteria for admission to benefit candidates who have membership in the Church of North India (CNI). He was not a member of the CNI. The college came out with two cut-offs for the course - one for applicants who were members of the CNI and the other for those who were not members. "At the time of submitting the application, there was no mention of different cut-off marks within the Christian community," argued lawyer Agarwal.
