Student unions garner youth support for their parties

With MCD elections drawing closer, not only are councillors upping their ante, but student unions across Delhi University (DU) and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) are doing everything they can to gather support for their party.

“Two of our former presidents from Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) are contesting the polls this time. We will visit their wards and tell people about their work when they were presidents,” said Ajay Chhikara, president, DUSU.

National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) is the students’ arm of the Congress. Former NSUI leader Mahendra Chaudhary will contest from Mehrauli on a Congress ticket. DUSU’s former president Amrita Dhawan and former vice president Shalu Malik will contest from Vikaspuri (east) and Shastri Nagar respectively.

NSUI is now mobilising the DU youth to garner support for these candidates. “We will make students aware that three prominent people from NSUI are going to contest the elections and we will urge them to vote for them,” Chhikara added.

“Once the campaigning process starts on April 1, we will visit all these areas and carry out door-to-door campaigns to tell them about the candidates and their potential,” said Piyush Raj, vice president, JNU-AISA.

CPI-ML’s candidates are contesting from seven wards.
