The second round of admissions at Delhi University is witnessing huge enrollments. But many students are also withdrawing admissions in order to enroll in a college or course of their choice.

With colleges slashing their cutoffs in the second list, the last two days have seen students opting out of colleges they took admission in the first list.

Both Hindu and Hans Raj College have seen 10 and 20 withdrawals, respectively, in the BCom (H) programme. “Since SRCC declared a second cutoff, it was natural that students would move. We enroll students keeping in mind the withdrawal rate,” said S.R. Arora, principal, Hans Raj College.

Most colleges, in fact, admit more students than the number of seats in order to adjust withdrawals.

“Most students enroll in whatever course or college they get through in the first list. But when the second list comes out, they move to their preferred college. For instance, many students in BA (H) Economics are actually interested in Engineering. Some who have applied for law are also awaiting their results and will move if they qualify,” said Manasvini Yogi, media coordinator at IP College.

At Kamla Nehru College, 17 students withdrew admission from BCom (H) and 17 from BCom Programme. Students have also withdrawn from courses like Philosophy, Psychology (withdrawals) and Political Science.

At Lady Sri Ram College, which had declared highest cutoffs for most subjects, few students withdrew as enrollment picked up in subjects like BCom (H), Economics and Psychology. “We might declare a third cutoff list for a few subjects including Philosophy, Math, Statistics and English,” said Kanika Khandelwal, media coordinator.
