Caught in the crossfire between university authorities and the Delhi University Teachers' Association (DUTA) over the implementation of the semester system, the students have lost valuable teaching hours due to frequent strikes and dharnas by the teachers.

Under the semester system, the students will be evaluated twice a year and there has to be at least 15 weeks of teaching per semester.

But on Monday, DUTA announced another elaborate 17-day (September 1 to 17) 'action plan' to strike work and hold protests. Principals admitted that students will face problems appearing for the first semester examination. "In the semester mode of teaching, each day is precious as it has a fixed schedule. So, loss of even one day means students and teachers both run behind schedule," said S.K. Garg, principal of Deen Dayal Upadhayay College.

Some colleges said they would ensure students complete their course in time for the first semester examination. "If need be, we will hold extra classes and call them even on Sunday," said Sunil Sondhi, principal of Maharaja Agrasen College.
