The cleanliness bug has caught the Tihar Jail officials, who have issued a diktat that the prison walls must not have any spit marks.

‘Spit-free zones’ have come up in the jail premises, with posters warning officials of not spitting over the walls. The prison headquarters said the exercise is part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.
Before issuing the order, the prison walls and hallways were cleaned and whitewashed. A special checking drive was also conducted which included the prison’s office floors to check for spit marks and litter.
Jail authorities said that the decision was to make the offices inside the prison compound a spit free zone. All jail superintendents have been asked to ensure that the prison is free of any spit marks.
“It was felt that many of the offices which were built years ago were dirty and there are numerous spit marks in the walls. Offices are periodically whitewashed and painted. Yet littering and spit marks continue to show up. So now, all the offices have been given a dust bin and a pamphlet has been distributed to ensure that the order of ‘no spitting’ is followed. Action will be taken if any office is found with spit marks,” said a jail official.
Earlier, this month, jail Superintendents also conducted inspection of the offices, according to their report to the home department. Apart from this, the authorities have also whitewashed the buildings and wards inside the jail compound.
