The drizzle grew stronger by afternoon and pushed the mercury six degrees down from where it usually is at this time of the year, the Met department said.

While the total rainfall on Wednesday was just 1.6 mm, the downpour was distributed over several hours in the afternoon.

“There might be light rains and thundershowers tomorrow,” said a Met department official.

With grey clouds staying put all day, the mist thickened between the drizzles, even

as Delhiites reached for their woollens.

At 21.3 degrees Celsius, this was one of the lowest daytime temperatures this November.

“It had started getting chilly since yesterday. But today, with the rain and mist, it was Delhi winter at its notorious best,” said Anubhuti Chawla, a resident of South Extension Part I.

Thanks to the clouds hovering over the city since Tuesday, the minimum temperature, recorded early morning, stayed six degrees above normal at 15.7 degrees Celsius.

With rain, the possibility of fog also increased.

The Met officials said there could be fog on Thursday and it could affect traffic.

“Wednesday afternoon was unusually dark due to the cloud cover. If the clouds stay and if there is fog, it will be really dangerous to drive on Delhi’s roads on Thursday,” said Sunil Aurora, an entrepreneur, who works in Connaught Place.

This November, Delhi has so far received 27 mm of rainfall, which is higher than its total monthly rainfall in the previous 10 years.

“The cyclonic circulation over Rajasthan and the cloud cover over Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh are causing this development,” the official said. “These weather conditions will stay on till Friday.”
