Air conditioners on full blast, the city experienced the hottest day in May in a decade on Thursday. The maximum temperature at Safdarjung station was recorded at 45.7 degrees Celsius, six degrees above normal.

The minimum was recorded at 31.4 degrees, five degrees above normal. Other parts of NCR had it worse as the temperature crossed 46 degrees. At Palam, the temperature was recorded as 47.2 degrees while in Gurgaon it was 46.1 degrees.
Noida and Indirapuram saw the maximum temperature rising to 45 degrees Celsius. The all-time highest May temperature at Safdarjung was recorded as 47.2 degrees in 1944.
Delhi has been in the grip of a severe heat wave since May 18. The temperatures have been above 44 degrees Celsius consistently for a week. According to Met officials, the heat is going to abate next week, but only by a couple of degrees.
On Friday, the maximum temperature is likely to be 45 degrees Celsius.
