For two hours every morning, from 8.30am to 10.30am, Tihar’s 10 sub-jails will turn into virtual classrooms focusing on turning the unlettered — around 2,400 inmates - into neo literates. “Currently, 66% inmates have studied till Class 10th and lower,” said Tihar jail’s Director General (prisons) Neeraj Kumar.

He added, “The project, run jointly by the National Literacy Mission Authority and the prison administration, will make the unlettered proficient in reading and writing, basic arithmetic, and in the usage of mobile phones and banking operations through them.”

The project, first reported by Hindustan Times on Sunday, is driven by an idea according to which education/literacy can serve as a powerful antidote to crime and create alternate livelihood options. HTC
