"The Delhi Government's Home department has asked our opinion on the issue of allowing our undertrials on transit remand to avail the facility of AC-3 tier when travelling by train," Law officer and spokesperson Tihar jail Sunil Gupta said.

The opinion was sought following a Delhi Police proposal for the same stating that as per Sixth pay Commission recommendations, armed police guards who escort the undertrials are now entitled to avail the AC-3 tier facility in
railways.

The question was that why policemen have to travel in sleeper class just because the undertrials are not entitled to the AC travel, hence the Home Department is considering the issue, Gupta said.

The Third Battalion of the Delhi Armed Police (DAP) is entrusted with escorting undertrials to and from courts in and outside Delhi.

Depending on the type of prisoners, the policemen in the rank of head constables and constables are deployed with them on long distance travel by train.
