TN lawyers maintain stand to withdraw strike

Tamil Nadu lawyers told the SC that their ongoing strike would not be called off unless action was taken against the police officers allegedly responsible for the recent clash between the advocates and police in the Madras High Court.

Various lawyers associations from the state conveyed the stand of the members of the Bar to a Bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan which had on Friday last had them to return to work in the interest of the citizens who are facing hardships due to the advocates' strike since Janaury 29.

The lawyers' associations said it was decided that the strike will continue till the apex court-appointed committee headed by its retired judge B N Srikrishna submits its report and actions are taken against the police officers responsible for the February 19 clash.

The advocates have demanded that the guilty policemen be suspended instead of being let off with transfers.

Under such circumstances, the Bench, also comprising Justices P Sathasivam and J M Panchal, preferred to defer hearing for Friday as the report by Justice Srikrishna is likely to be submitted on Thursday.
