The police fined people for various traffic violations during a special drive. However, nearly two-thirds of the prosecutions were for drink driving.
"A total of 307 people were challaned during the three-hour drive conducted in 50 locations of the capital," said Satyendra Garg, joint commissioner of police (traffic). Of this, 195 were prosecuted for drunken driving.
"Drunken driving offenders will appear in court with punishment in fines, suspension of driving licence and a possible jail term," said Garg.
According to the traffic police records, 35 people were prosecuted for dangerous driving, 60 for no-entry restrictions and 17 for other violations. Drivers of 151 motorcycles, 72 cars, 59 heavy vehicles and 25 light vehicles were prosecuted and as many as 64 vehicles were impounded as well.
