With the new autorickshaw fares coming into effect, the Delhi Traffic Police have decided to take steps to rein in unscrupulous drivers and stop harassment of passengers. They will paste stickers containing phone numbers — 25844444 (to call and register complaints) and 56767 (to register complaint through SMS) — inside and outside autorickshaws. Commuters can register complaints on these numbers. So the next time an autorickshaw driver refuses to go by the meter or misbehaves, just call or SMS your complaint to the traffic police’s complaint cell.

The process of pasting stickers will start from Monday and launch a crackdown on them for fleecing commuters, said Anil Shukla, additional commissioner of police (traffic). Shukla ordered printing of the stickers on Friday afternoon.

“With autorickshaw drivers’ demand for a fare hike being met, we now want the perennial problem of commuters being fleeced by autorickshaw drivers to become a matter of past,” Shukla said.

If an autorickshaw driver refuses to go, one will have to type REF, vehicle number, location, time of refusal and send it to 56767 from his/her mobile phone. Similarly, for overcharging, he has to type OVC, MIS for misbehaviour and HAR for harassment and send it with the above mentioned details (as in case of refusal).

Meanwhile, Delhi Transport minister Ramakant Goswami has called a high-level meeting of all the stakeholders, including the enforcement wing of the transport department, traffic police, Delhi Police officers responsible for law and order, officials of the Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System (DIMTS) and leaders of autorickshaw unions on Monday to devise a mechanism to deal with the menace, said officials.
