Trapped in car blaze on flyover, man dies

A 28-year-old man was charred to death while his five friends had a lucky escape as their speeding car burst into flames after hitting a divider and a wall on the Rao Tula Ram Marg flyover in south Delhi early Thursday morning.

A 28-year-old man was charred to death while his five friends had a lucky escape as their speeding car burst into flames after hitting a divider and a wall on the Rao Tula Ram Marg flyover in south Delhi early Thursday morning.

All six occupants — four men and two women — of the Honda City are Afghan nationals. The deceased was behind the wheel and got trapped as the car burst into flames. The others managed to jump out.

The narrow RTR flyover is a nightmare for motorists. It started off as a single carriageway flyover three years ago but now has two-way traffic. The divider is only half-built and starts midway through the flyover.

“They were going home to Lajpat Nagar after a party in Gurgaon. An eyewitness who made the PCR call told us the speeding car first hit the concrete divider in the middle of the flyover,” a senior police officer said. “The car then seemed to lose balance and hit the wall of the flyover. Soon after the crash, it caught fire.”
