Two vegetable vendors were killed and two others injured when a speeding truck loaded with cement bags crashed into a pavement and overturned on roadside shops in south Delhi’s RK Puram early Tuesday morning.
The accident took place around 1.30 am in front of the Indian Diary Association (IDA) building in RK Puram Sector-4.
The deceased have been identified as Mohammad Khalid, 44, a native of Barabanki in Uttar Pradesh and Shiv Mahto, 26, from Chapra district in Bihar. The injured vegetable vendors are Mritunjay Ram, 25, and Raj Dev, 41, both from Bihar.
A case of rash and negligent driving causing death and injury was registered against the driver, Mohammad Yakoob. Police arrested him after he surrendered. The truck was confiscated, police said.
A senior police officer said the truck with a Rajasthan number was coming from the IGI airport side when the accident took place.
The driver of the truck told the police that he lost control of his vehicle after the front left tyre of the truck exploded while it was descending from the Munirka flyover.
"The truck was at such a speed that it climbed on to the pavement, the height of which is more than 4 feet from the road, and overturned on to the vegetable shops inside which the victims were sleeping. The truck skidded for more than five metres. There would have been more damage to public and property had it not halted after crashing into an electricity pole," said the senior officer.

"The victims were rushed to the AIIMS Trauma Centre where two of them were pronounced dead on arrival. The other two injured were discharged after medical attention," added the senior officer.
One of the injured, Mritunjay Ram, said he was sleeping inside his shop when he heard a loud sound.
"Before I could come out of my shack to see what happened, a big stone hit my leg. I somehow came out and saw a truck upside down on the pavement. Khalid and Mahto were trapped under the truck," said Ram.
