According to the police, the incident occurred at about 8am on Tuesday when the girls were trying to cross the closed gates and were caught between two passing trains.

“The two girls also tried to cross the tracks. People tried to alert the two, but because of the noise of trains, the girls did not hear the shouts and were overrun by Dehradun-Shatabdi Express,” said the gateman.

The victims were students at Shishu Shiksha Niketan and Dayawati Modi schools respectively in Modi Nagar.

“The two died on the spot but we have sent the bodies for an autopsy,” said Modi Nagar station house officer Yogesh Pathak.
