Undertrial escapes from police custody in Delhi

An undertrial, who was brought to the capital by Punjab Police, today escaped from custody just before he was to be produced before a court in New Delhi.

Sunil Kumar managed to free himself from the policemen escorting him when he was being taken to a sessions court at around 10 am in the Tis Hazari complex, police said.

The accused was brought from Punjab by a team of five police personnel, led by Assistant Sub Inspector Gurvinder Singh.

Kumar was to be tried in a robbery case, which was registered with the Special Cell of Delhi police last year, in the court of Additional Sessions Judge Brajesh Sethi.

During the proceedings before the court, Deputy Superintendent of Police of Punjab Police Narendra Singh submitted that Kumar ran away from the custody and an enquiry has been ordered into the matter.

He also said that a case has been registered against the accused at police station Subji Mandi here under section 224 (resistance or obstruction by a person to his lawful apprehension) of the IPC.
