Every flame that laps up a life reminds Neelam Krishnamoorthy of her two children whom she lost to the Uphaar Cinema fire 14 years ago.

Krishnamoorthy and all the others who have been fighting for justice all these years point out that such accidents happen due to the laxity in implementing the laws.
“The laws are made but there is no implementation. We compromise excessively when it comes to safety. If something of this kind happens in Delhi, the loss will be much more,” said Krishnamoorthy, who is the president of Association of the Victims of Uphaar Tragedy.
Courts have also not done their duty when it comes to punishing those involved in such heinous crimes. “Till date, not even one person has gone behind bars for being responsible for any fire incident. There is no deterrent. You can’t buy life with money alone. Responsibility needs to be fixed,” she says.
