Congress on Thursday termed BJP leader Varun Gandhi's undertaking to Etah jail authorities that he will not make inflammatory speeches "an admission of the blunder that he committed" and said his release on parole is "temporary".
"It's an admission of the blunder that he committed. All the bravado is gone... The process of becoming a hero ended into zero. All claims of martyrhood is gone. This is nothing but abject surrender for parole," party spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi told reporters in New Delhi.
Terming the release of Varun Gandhi a "temporary release", Singhvi said "the law is above all and the law has put him (Gandhi) under tight leash."
"The message by the SC is clear and unequivocal. It proves the law is above all how so high he may be," Singhvi added.
In a conditional reprieve for detained BJP leader Varun Gandhi, the Supreme Court on Thursday ordered his release on parole for two weeks after he gave the undertaking to Etah jail authorities.
The apex court imposed a stringent condition that 29-year-old Varun, held under the National Security Act, will not make any speech against a community, religion, race and disturb public order during the period of parole.
