Police have now advised these associations to hire them from a panel of verified workers only.

After the incident, southeast district police have passed on a set of guidelines to RWAs in the area covering Lajpat Nagar, Amar Colony, Greater Kailash, CR Park, New Friends Colony and Maharani Bagh."This is for the safety of residents. We have advised RWAs to form a panel of workers required for odd jobs and get them verified. The residents should also not talk about the presence of cash and jewellery inside the house," said Amulya Patnaik, Joint Commissioner of Police (southern range).

Recently, in Amar colony area of southeast Delhi, a 55-year-old woman was attacked by unidentified men. During the course of investigation, police found that the family had hired carpenters a few days ago as there was a marriage in the family.

Delhi Police have already instructed residents to get their servants and tenants verified. “In many cases, domestic helps were found involved in crime. We have taken several steps to ensure residents are hiring verified helps. Now it is time to make them aware of verifications of those who visit their homes for odd jobs like electricians, painters, carpenters, mechanics and plumbers,” the officer further said.

A senior police officer said that RWAs should give proper employment to these workers and get them verified.

“They can work as a placement cell and give permanent employment to these workers and take money from residents,” the officer said.

When asked, the RWAs felt that forming a panel of such workers was a tough task, but they were willing to try and do it to ensure their safety.
