Waste-to-energy plant at Narela to miss deadline yet again

Hindustan Times had earlier reported that the project had missed its deadline. North civic body sources say the promise of swift completion won’t be fulfilled because of “delay in paperwork”.

Vijay Prakash Pandey, chairman of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation’s department of environment management services (DEMS) committee, told HT that the project will take time.

“We are expecting it to start by December. However, the finance required for the project is taking some time to come. A bank loan was applied for and it requires time,” Pandey said, adding that the loan hasn’t been received yet due to some necessary documentation, which has not been done.

“The signing of the corporation’s agreement, which was required for the loan to be passed, has not been done yet. This necessary paperwork will be completed soon,” he said.

The Capital’s three existing landfill sites at Bhalaswa, Okhla and Ghazipur have exhausted their capacity and are mountains of waste.

Despite repeated court orders, the corporations continue to dump garbage at these sites.
