NEW DELHI: Better understanding of the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) system for Class X over the years has helped the students in scoring 10 CGPA in CBSE Board exams, experts said.

The CCE scheme refers to a school-based evaluation of students which has regular assessments based on written tests and activity based assignments conducted in schools.

“When the system was introduced, not many students and teachers understood it. But with each passing years everyone is able to understand it better. Now students know that taking part in activity-based assignments is equally important for their grades,” said Jyoti Arora, principal Mount Abu School and member CBSE governing body.

Principals said that students now understood the importance of taking part in extracurricular activities as it can help them score better marks in their final results. “Students did not take ECA very seriously, but now they know it can help them score better so they perform well in extracurricular activities,” said L V Sehgal, principal Bal Bharti School, Ganga Ram Hospital Marg.

Some teachers felt that since the CGPA system does not give exact numbers and gives same grade to students scoring a range of numbers, it has led to students being lax.

“There is a general notion that all students will pass till Class 10. In the CGPA system a 91% and 99%, both are awarded the same CGPA 10 and a gradepoint of A1. The competition among students has decreased as has the motivation to study,” said Rooma Pathak, principal of MM Public School. (With inputs from Sruthi)
