Will expand monorail to more areas, says Sheila

Residents of east Delhi can soon look forward to an improved public transport system. Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit said that her government was planning to extend monorail facility to more colonies in the Trans-Yamuna Area. The announcement came on close heels of in-principle approval for the commissioning of the first monorail corridor between Shastri Park and Trilokpuri.

“There are many localities in the Trans-Yamuna Area where it is difficult to extend Delhi Metro services and even ply low-floor buses. So, in order to provide proper public transport system in these areas, we have decided to chalk out a plan to extend monorail services in more localities under the Trans-Yamuna Area,” Dikshit said after inaugurating a community centre at Ghonda.

Experts believe that monorail is most suited for densely populated and congested areas where heavy rail system like Metro and city buses cannot ply. New small taxis would also be introduced in the Trans-Yamuna Area.

The community centre at Ghonda that the chief minister inaugurated on Friday has been constructed with the help of funds released by the Trans-Yamuna Area Development Board. This is the 50th such community centre funded by the Board.
