Swine flu is back with the monsoons, with the hot, humid weather causing infection to peak in rain-drenched Kerala and Maharashtra.

In the week ending July 4, India reported 370 H1N1 cases, of which 222 were in Kerala and 72 in Maharashtra. There have been 16 deaths, 10 in Kerala, four in Maharashtra and two in Andhra. Delhi has reported no cases over the past month.
In the monsoon-wave, infection has spiked among pregnant women.
They account for one-third of the 39 deaths in Kerala in
a month, prompting the state to ask the Centre to send an additional one lakh H1N1 vaccine doses for pregnant women.
“The bridging study of Sanofi Pasteur vaccine and the clinical trials for Zydus Cadila did not include pregnant women. Since the inactivated Sanofi Pasteur vaccine has been given to pregnant women in Canada, US, UK and other European countries, an Indian Council of Medical Research committee has met and will announce tomorrow whether pregnant women in Kerala should also be vaccinated along with health workers,” said Union Health Secretary Sujatha Rao.
