A 28-year-old woman hanged herself at her Mandawli residence on Monday afternoon. The family members of the woman alleged that her husband, an engineer in a private company, killed her as he used to demand for dowry.

"The victim's father has alleged dowry harassment and we have recorded his statement in presence of the SDM," OP Mishra, deputy commissioner of police (east) said.

According to the police, the victim, identified as Vinita (28), got married to Lalit two years ago. She is survived by a 11-month-old girl.

"Lalit's parents called Vinita's family members and informed them about the suicide. It was Vinita's family members who informed the police," said a senior police officer.

A case of dowry death has been registered at the Mandawli police station and further investigations are on.
