A Delhi court has convicted a woman for abandoning her one-day-old baby girl near a railway line. The child had later died at a local hospital due to hypothermia.
Convicting Safia Khatoon, additional sessions judge Madhu Jain said, "The child was found near the railway line and the only inference that can be drawn is that the accused abandoned the child there and thereafter, the child died due to cold conditions." The woman could face imprisonment up to 10 years.
In November 2010, Delhi police was informed about an abandoned day-old baby girl near a railway line in Sadar Bazar area. The police took the child to Bada Hindu Rao hospital, where she died later.
In her statement, Safia had vehemently denied that the baby was hers but a DNA test confirmed she was the mother of the infant. Also, several eyewitnesses also identified her as the woman who dumped her there.
