During the drive, women constables in plain clothes at were deputed at five Metro stations in Gurgaon.

There was high drama when nearly 50 women passengers and the constables started thrashing men who were caught on the wrong coach.

They were even asked to do sit-ups as punishment, much to the amusement of onlookers.

"Whenever we asked men not to enter the reserved coach, they used to pass comments. The same thing happened on Thursday but the women officers helped us," said Sanjana, who was travelling from Gurgaon to Barakhamba Road.

Another passenger Ragini said, "This is the only solution as men keep harassing us. If the coach is meant for women, why do men have to enter it in the first place?"

"We had been receiving a lot of complaints and were planning to take action. On Thursday, we decided to post teams to check the menace," Gurgaon police commissioner SS Deswal said.

As many as 1.2 lakh commuters use the five stations in Gurgaon - Guru Dronacharya, Sikanderpur, MG Road, IFFCO Chowk and HUDA City Centre - everyday.

According to a survey, women constitute one-fourth of the total Metro commuter strength.

"We are issuing challans of Rs 200 each to violators as per the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation rules but stricter action would be taken if the menace doesn't stop," Deswal further said.

According to the police, they faced some resistance as women constables were in plain clothes.
