Residents of East Delhi and Ghaziabad will soon be able to enjoy the comfort of travelling in the Metro. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) started trial runs on the much awaited Yamuna Bank-Anand Vihar section on Saturday.
The 6.17-km Yamuna Bank-Anand Vihar corridor, which will be the fourth line to be added to the Delhi Metro network, cuts through densely populated residential and important commercial and institutional areas. The section is expected to open by the end of this month or early January 2010.
The trial runs began at 10 a.m. from Laxmi Nagar station and one round trip up to Preet Vihar station was conducted successfully by 10.35 a.m.
Trial runs will continue for some weeks and the line will open by its deadline, depending on a safety clearance and the availability of trains.
“About a lakh people are expected to use the Yamuna Bank-Anand Vihar line daily,” a DMRC spokesman said. The number may go up considerably after the opening of a mega railway station, which is coming up just next to the Anand Vihar metro station.
DMRC also plans to increase the number of trains on the Noida-Dwarka Line from 38 to 42. Officials said alternate trains coming from Dwarka would go to Anand Vihar and Noida stations. There are five metro stations along this elevated stretch — Laxmi Nagar, Nirman Vihar,Preet Vihar, Karkarduma and Anand Vihar.
