The Delhi government has announced a Rs 2.5-lakh reward for any individual or company who can come up with the perfect design of a skywalk at ITO — the execution of which has challenged the government for over two years now.

The public works department (PWD) wants to build the longest skywalk of the Capital at ITO — where the metro and railway lines are at different heights and there are three crossings within a kilometre — to connect offices and metro stations.

“There are over 25 major offices in the ITO area, besides two metro stations, the Tilak Bridge railway station and seven major arterial roads which leads to inter-crossing of pedestrian with vehicular traffic, threatening lives of pedestrians. Further, with the newly commissioned metro station in ITO on Bahadur Shah Zafar (BSZ) Marg, the volume of pedestrian traffic in the area is going to shoot up,” said a PWD official.

At present, there is only one foot-overbridge (FoB) in ITO, on Vikas Marg. Recently, the DMRC constructed a sub-way facilitating pedestrians to cross Vikas Marg, BSZ Marg and DDU Marg. However, there is no FoB or subway at the Pragati Maidan metro station crossing, putting pedestrians at risk.

The PWD said the design should have an FoB connecting the footpath of Sikandara Road (towards Tilak Marg Side) to the parking lot near the Pragati Maidan metro station across Mathura Road. The deck of this FoB could be linked to the proposed FoB being constructed by the DMRC near the Pragati Maidan metro station. One ramp may also be provided for access to Tilak Marg footpath near Supreme Court.

“Another FoB may start at the point on the Railway Lane (College Lane) near the Tilak Bridge Railway Station and may be connected to the first FOB at under the metro viaduct. The third FOB may connect the footpath of DDU Marg to the lane near the Nallah on the other side of the BSZ Marg,” the official added.
