Back to exam hall

Over 40,000 teachers from state-run schools will appear for an examination in a subject of their expertise

The teachers will sit for Class X and Class XII papers set by the CBSE

The exam, on October 31, will be conducted by an external examiner

The examination will be of 3.15 hour duration. The first 3 hours will be for answering the question paper, while the remaining 15 minutes will be for answering questions on Yuva, the Delhi government’s special programme for adolescents

Director education Vijay Kumar will appear for the Class X Mathematics paper. “The idea is to test how much you know of the subject that you teach your students. And are you capable of handling the Class X or XII CBSE examination? Some teachers grumbled about being asked to appear for a school examination, but they stopped complaining after they were told that we would also take the exam,” said Ray.

And what about those who fare badly or even fail the exams? “Those who are weak in their subject will be trained further. But this will also help us identify those who are excellent at their job,” Ray added. Directorate officials say the exam will also help identify problem areas for students.

The special examination will be the finale to a three-week training module designed for all subjects that will start on October 3. Teachers will not only get new input on their subjects from experts, but also learn how to teach better in class. A special manual has been prepared for instructing teachers on methods to cover the complete syllabus.

“The formulae worked for Mathematics last year. We held workshops in Mathematics and the results improved drastically,” Ray said. Teachers will undergo five days of rigourous training from experts invited from DU, the IIT and Jamia Millia Islamia among others.

For a change, it is the teachers’ turn for exam phobia.
