JDU won the Bihar assembly elections in 2005 in alliance with BJP and Nitish Kumar became CM for the first time. In the 2010 election, the JDU-BJP alliance won 206 out of 243 seats, of which JDU got 115 seats. In 2013, JDU broke the 17-year-old alliance with the BJP as Nitish Kumar disagreed with Narendra Modi as the face of the NDA. In the 2014 Lok Sabha election, JDU won only two seats, after which Nitish Kumar resigned as CM and Jitan Ram Manjhi took his place. In the 2015 Bihar assembly elections, the JDU formed a Grand Alliance with the RJD and Congress; and won 178 seats for Nitish to again became the CM. In the 2024 Lok Sabha election, JDU won 12 seats and became the seventh largest party in Parliament. Currently, the JDU is leading the NDA government in Bihar and Nitish Kumar has become the longest-serving CM of the state.
