The top two candidates split 97.3% of votes between them. Bharatiya Janata Party's Basanagoud .R. Patil (YATNAL) got a total of 76,308 votes, while Indian National Congress's Abdul Hameed Mushrif secured 69,895 votes. Janata Dal (Secular)'s candidate Bellubbi Sangappa Kallappa secured 2,083 votes to finish at the third place. The top three parties got 50.8%, 46.5% and 1.4% respectively.
In Karnataka Assembly election 2013, Indian National Congress's Makbul S Bagawan beat Janata Dal (Secular)'s Basanagouda R Patil (YATNAL) by 9,380 votes.
