Increasing Indian presence at the Cannes Film Festival

The Cannes this year will see a host of Indian celebrities starting with Shekhar Gupta being a part of the jury, Freida Pinto for her upcoming Woody Allen movie , Abhi-Ash duo for Ravana and the team of Udaan the official Indian entry.

At the 63rd Cannes International Film Festival that opens on May 12, Shekhar Kapur will rub shoulders with seven other global stars including filmmaker Tim Burton, actress Kate Beckinsale and Oscar-winning actor Benicio Del Toro, as part of the Feature Film Jury. Freida Pinto will accompany Oscar-winning actor-director Woody Allen to the screening of You Will Meet a Tall DarkStranger in the ‘Out of Competition’ and Aishwarya and Abhishek Bachchan will team up with filmmaker Mani Ratnam for the screening of Ravana at the ‘Official India Pavillion’.

India’s official entry, debutant director Vikramaditya Motwane’s Udaan, will bring Ronit Roy and Ram Kapoor and producer Anurag Kashyap, to the fest. The ‘Official India Pavillion’ will be hosted by I&B ministry and the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM). “There will be workshops and talks to promote India as a shooting and special effects hub,” says Ajay Sharma, director of ASSOCHAM.
