Cinderella slippers for Natalie Portman
Today Natalie Portman turns 29. And among her many birthday gifts is a pair of Cinderella slippers from Rinaldi’s new collection that Rina Shah has specially designed for the Hollywood star.fashion and trends Updated: Jun 09, 2010 13:31 IST
Speaking from California, just before she tumbles into bed, Shah points out that she specifically singled out Portman for a gift because, like her, the actress is an active supporter of animal rights who refuses to wear leather in real life or reel, and in 2008 released her own line of ‘vegan’ shoes and accessories.
Shah who was appalled to hear from friends at People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) that slaughtering of cows, goats and buffaloes is illegal in only two states in India, and elsewhere in the country, these animals are lead to the gallows, literally, and have their legs hacked off or are skinned when still alive. The runoff from leather tanneries poisons rivers and streams, harming life within, and resulting in diseases like cancer in humans.
Shah flagged off a career in designing in 1997. Rinaldi Designs was founded a decade ago and its unique ‘vegan’ shoes and bags was started as a protest against such inhuman cruelty against animals. “Today, it is the only high-end Indian accessories brand to be consciously and completely non-leather,” Shah says proudly.
The shoes sent to Portman are from Shah’s Cinderella Collection. Sparkling with Swarovski crystals, these glass slippers were inspired by the popular fairy tale of a scullery maid who turns princess for a night, then in her hurry to leave before the clock strikes 12, leaves one of her sole mates behind to bring her soul mate to her.
“You don’t usually find formal Swarvoski footwear in non-leather,” points out Shah, explaining her use of glass and crystal and adds that you can pick up a pair from the stores too for Rs 9,500.
Portman is luckier. She’s got her Cinderella shoes for free. What was her reaction to the unique gift? “I’m waiting for it, I’ll know once her gift reaches her on her birthday.”
Will she be celebrating the day with the star? “No, I will not be attending the party but my best wishes wrapped up in my shoes will be with her.”
