Designer duo create garment for Katy Perry

After making popstar Fergie’s outfit for the opening ceremony of the FIFA World Cup in South Africa, city-based designer duo Falguni and Shane Peacock have taken their conquest one step further by designing for Katy Perry.

After making popstar Fergie’s outfit for the opening ceremony of the FIFA World Cup in South Africa, city-based designer duo Falguni and Shane Peacock have taken their conquest one step further. The Peacocks are designing a bodysuit for singer Katy Perry, for her appearance on the hit UK show, X Factor.



Since the singer will be performing the song Fireworks, the designers created a black sequined bodysuit, decorated with red, blue and gold sequins to imitate flames. "They told us that they didn’t want anything that would remind people of Lady Gaga, that meant no spikes, studs and nothing too outlandish," says Shane. "They told us to tone down the initial sketches we sent, until we settled on this design."

He reveals that the deal came through Perry’s stylist who had attended the duo’s London Fashion Week showing. "All the stylists there appreciate Indian embroidery and handiwork, but they don’t want anything that looks too ethnic because on such an international, it might alienate some sections of the audience. But since the work is all being handmade by Indian craftsmen, it’s a proud moment for the country," grins Shane.



Among the people who’ve already sported their designs are Michelle Williams of Destiny’s Child and Brandy. Talks are on with representatives of Lady Gaga and the garments are currently being sketched out.

Ask Shane if there’s any Indian artiste who he’d like to dress or who’d dare to wear their risqué bodysuits and he replies, “People here prefer to play it safe and while they may appreciate the style, they are not comfortable experimenting. The reason why someone like Lady Gaga shot to international fame and became a fashion icon is because she is never afraid to try something new.”
