Actor, singer and television personality Sophie Choudry, the host of HT Most Stylish 2016, talks style with HT. She shares her fashion inspiration, wardrobe must-haves and go-to style hacks.

TV personality Sophie Choudry says style is a part of your core being and not something you attain just by having money.

What does style mean to you? Do you think a lot of people confuse fashion with style?

Style, to me, is a lot more than what you are wearing. It’s the way you carry yourself, your demeanour, the way you speak, interact with others, the way you live. Style is reflected in every aspect of your life and personality. It’s not transient or temporary. Style is a part of your core being and not something you attain just by having money. For me, style whispers, money shouts! However, fashion is about expressing who you are through the clothes you wear. Fashion is a serious business, but something one should have fun with as an individual.

Is there someone you look up to as a style inspiration?

I know it’s cliche but it has to be my mum, Yasmin. She made heads turn wherever she went in the early 90s. And, in India, women didn’t really dress like that until much later. Certainly not women with two kids! I also think (designer) Manish Malhotra has tremendous style and not just in terms of clothes but in everything he does. Be it his home, his events or simply the way he carries himself, he makes everything around him beautiful and stylish because that is his core being. He will say that he comes from a simple middle class family, but that just proves my point that you can have all the money in the world and still not be stylish. It is something that comes from within, your values and the way you look at life.

Sophie counts a pair of nude heels, a little black dress or a little red dress among her must-haves.

If you had to pick three things from your wardrobe you can’t live without, what would they be?

Nude Louboutin stilettos! Because, no matter what, a pair of nude heels will ensure your legs look your best. Also, a little black dress or a little red dress. Perhaps black because it’s timeless but red always makes you feel so much more glamorous. And most importantly, my slim Boyfriend Jeans. I know people see me mostly in dresses and all glammed up, but I am a complete denim girl and I cannot live without my jeans!

Any style hacks/tips you’d want to share with our readers?

I don’t know if this falls under a style or a fashion tip but my number one rule is: never wear something unless you feel confident in it! The whole point of wearing clothes is to make you feel good, so why wear something which is unflattering, ill-fitting and something you don’t feel good in? Even if it’s on trend doesn’t mean it will work for you. Also, the right undergarments are essential. Invest in them as much as the rest of your wardrobe. And most of all, feel good from within. Eat healthy, workout, stay positive, focus on the important things in life.. because what you are on the inside reflects on the outside. No amount of highlighter can replace inner glow!
