It’s that time of the year when bling becomes the flavour of the season. But while you so much love to look dressy, you also face the risk of ending up looking like a Chandni Chowk mannequin. “It’s quite easy to go over the top during the festive season. You are drawn towards outfits in loud colours, you can’t resist jewellery, and then you have bright make-up on. All this can result in a fashion disaster,” says designer Gautam Gupta.

Jewel it right

The key to get your look right during the festive season is to stick to the thumb rules of styling:

If you are wearing an outfit that is ornate, cut down on the additional bling by wearing minimum jewellery. Wearing everything in one go can make you look funny. If your outfit is not heavily embellished, wear one statement piece such as big earrings, and elaborate neckpiece or a waistband. Similarly, if you are wearing hair accessories, make sure you wear only one piece at a time rather than crowding everything up on your hair.

Keep make-up subtle

Bold eyes with bold lips will never work. If you are already wearing heavily kohl-lined eyes, or smoky eyes, go subtle with the lip colour. If your lips are bold red, a few coats of mascara on the lashes would suffice. Go for a barely-there base. Also avoid beauty blunders such as piling up layers of pan cake or foundation on your face. “Your face should have a natural sheen. Use a concealer, go for a light base and use loose face powder sparingly,” says beauty expert Richa Agarwal. So do glow this Diwali, but do not become a rangoli yourself.
