This is the first such initiative by the police department for the welfare of officers and their family members residing on campus. An ice-cream parlour and fast food joint will also open shortly in the area.

Families of more than 750 police personnel live in Gurgaon Police Lines and have no facility except a milk booth.

Even for minor grocery items, people have to visit the local market which is out of the colony.

Mittal said, "The canteen will benefit the police staff and retired personnel too. Though it is not similar to the Army CSD canteen, prices are still cheaper than the market rate."The stock will be supplied from CRPF, Kadarpur, according to requirement.

"Soon we will open an ice-cream parlour and fast food joint adjacent to the canteen. The area would be converted into a spot where children can enjoy their evenings and can have some snacks," added Mittal.

Police officers and their kin have welcomed the move. "Now, we will at least not have to go far to fetch basic grocery items," said a resident.
