Relocation of water pipes on Dwarka eway may hit supply
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), which wants to shift the pipelines at the earliest, held a meeting with Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) officials on Tuesday.
The city’s water supply may be disrupted intermittently next month during the shifting of the water pipelines in the alignment of the northern peripheral road (NPR), known as the Dwarka Expressway, during its proposed widening.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), which wants to shift the pipelines at the earliest, held a meeting with Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) officials on Tuesday.
The NHAI has appointed L&T Limited to construct an elevated road on the Dwarka Expressway and widen the existing surface road. Work is underway between the Delhi-Gurugram border near New Palam Vihar and the Basai railway over bridge (ROB).
RK Mishra, project director, L&T Limited, said, “Our work on the 8km portion of the Dwarka Expressway between the Basai ROB and the NH-48 near Kherki Daula will start after the master water pipelines, which fall in our widening alignment at different locations, are shifted.”
According to officials, the shifting of pipelines would disrupt the supply from the Chandu Budhera water treatment plant as three lines from the plant are part of the alignment of the Dwarka Expressway being widened at three different locations.
“We have asked NHAI officials to submit a detailed project report (DPR) of the water pipeline shifting, which will not happen in one go. Three pipelines will be shifted in different phases. We will ensure that water supply to the city from the Chandu Budhera plant does not suffer,” Sandeep Dahiya, executive engineer, GMDA, who was present at the meeting, said.
The GMDA supplies 150 to 170 million litres daily (MLD) from the Chandu Budhera water treatment plant to a boosting station in Sector 51, from where it is supplied to sectors 47 to 57.
The shifting of pipelines may hit the GMDA’s plan to start an additional water supply of 100 MLD from the Chandu Budhera water treatment plant to the Sector 51 boosting station to sectors 58 to 67 from May 1.
