The incident happened at a one-room shop near Mahavir Chowk on Wednesday morning and an FIR was registered under section 380 (theft in building) of the Indian Penal on Friday, police said.

The victim Harsh Raj, 48, a resident of Gopal Nagar in Sector 14, said that the incident took place at 9.50am on Wednesday when he was praying.

“Although I was praying with my eyes closed, I sensed some movement behind me but did not turn around immediately. When I turned around, I realised that my phone was missing from the counter,” he said.

Raj later went out and asked nearby shopkeepers whether they saw his phone. They said they didn’t, he said.

“Then I checked the CCTV footage, which showed a man stealing it while I was praying,” he said. He added that he has handed over the CCTV footage of the incident to the police. The accused is yet to be identified, the police said.
